MARCH 2012//

The concept of virtual worlds predates computers. In fact, it can be traced to the Roman naturalist Gaius Plinius, more commonly known as Pliny the Elder, who expressed one of the earliest recorded interests in perceptual illusion.[9][10] In the twentieth century, the cinematographer Morton Heilig explored the creation of the Sensorama, a theatre experience designed to stimulate the senses of the audience—vision, sound, balance, smell, even touch (via wind)--and so draw them more effectively into the productions[11]

Among the earliest virtual worlds implemented by computers were virtual reality simulators, such as the work of Ivan Sutherland. Such devices are characterized by bulky headsets and other types of sensory input simulation. Contemporary virtual worlds, in particular the multi-user online environments, emerged mostly independently of this research, fueled instead by the gaming industry but drawing on similar inspiration.[12] While classic sensory-imitating virtual reality relies on tricking the perceptual system into experiencing an immersive environment, virtual worlds typically rely on mentally and emotionally engaging content which gives rise to an immersive experience.

Being born and raised in California, M83's Hurry Up, We're Dreaming, inspired a nostalgic feeling of being an adolescent outsider. At times, being a teenager in 1990's California felt like being an alien from outer space that somehow landed in an ocean of human spectacle;
these are the drawing from the echoes of my memories.</description>

"I think art's the greatest currency in the world. Gold, diamonds, art -- I think they are equal ... I think it's a great thing to invest in."
- Damien Hirst

"In 1961, the Italian artist Piero Manzoni placed his own excrement in 90 small cans which he then sealed. He calculated the value of the cans in accordance with the market value of gold at the time. Today his creation is described as Conceptual Art, and the cans are in museums, galleries and private collections around the world. If a can of human shit can be called art, we shouldn't have too much trouble defining graphic design as art. If only it was that easy."
- Adrian Shaughnessy in Graphic Design: A User's Manual
I remove loose antique bricks in the sidewalks around Boston and Cambridge where I live. I spray paint them gold both in solidarity with and as a response to the graffiti movement and replace the bricks back into the sidewalks.

I sell the bricks for the price of gold per ounce depending on the date they are purchased to reflect the absurdity of both the art market as well as the stock market, in addition, this exchange measures the value of culture versus the arbitrary value of an object.

My artistic process is the continuing search for enlightenment through the inspired moment. My work is a statement that the moment of inspiration is a complete idea. This idea can be refined and cultivated,  yet the inspired moment happens instantaneously; art is born when all the faculties are in place to actualize the moment. I seek to realize this moment in both physical and ephemeral form.

My most recent work investigates the correlation between player and instrument through abstracting the guitar as both a tool and muse for creativity. I investigate the form and shape of the guitar by painting different renditions of a Fender Jaguar onto wooden panels of 6" x 12" birch plywood, as well as skateboards. I will be casting 101 guitar bodies into the solid form of white gypsum cement.

Each of the 101 guitars will resonate to a uniquely tuned intonation through individual amplifiers suggesting a greater experience than the most advanced surround systems.

Ultimately, the piece should simultaneously reference the incendiary guitars of Picasso, Rhys Chatham, and Glenn Branca while continuing the San Francisco Mission School of non-traditional craftsmanship.

SEP 2009 //

The Ohlone people, also known as the Costanoan, are the indigenous people of Northern California who occupy the areas around San Francisco Bay(also called Point Sur), Monterey Bay, and the lower Salinas Valley when the Spanish arrived in the late-18th century.
 *

The Christmas tree has seen an amount of controversy, mainly involving the secular and non-secular usage of the tree as well as groups who oppose usage of the tree on the grounds of interpretation of scripture and pagan origins and/or pagan character of the custom. There are also those who view it as a Christian symbol.

Summer 2007//

The rainbowfishes are a family of small, colourful, freshwater fish that are found in northern and eastern Australia and New Guinea and in the Southeast Asian Islands.

The dominant rainbowfish genus and its many species derive their generic name Melanotaenia from the Ancient Greek Melano (=black) and taenia (=banded). Translated, it means "black-banded" and is a reference to the often striking lateral black bands that run along the bodies of those in the Melanotaenia genus.

"Then along came Blowie, the lead singer holding his own fronting a very tight, very full band (two guitars, keyboards, drums and bass) consisting of musician's musicians, including Richard Marshall (Alice Donut). Blowie makes it a point to pay tribute to the Thin White Duke's less well-known songs as well as his sartorial splendor. Overall, it was all one could hope for from a local showcase - high energy, musically cohesive, community-spirited - and John Dwyer was there."
